Regional Bicycle Advisory Committee
The RBAC is a standing committee organized and hosted by the Roanoke Valley Allegheny Regional Commission. The Regional BAC was established in 2009 following a recommendation from a 2008 Bicycle Friendly Community workshop hosted in Roanoke by the League of American Bicyclist. The Regional BAC is composed of appointed representatives from local government (cities of Roanoke and Salem, the counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton); the Regional Commission; Roanoke Valley Area MPO, VDOT, Roanoke Valley Greenway Commission, RIDE Solutions, Roanoke Regional Partnership, Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and citizen advocates. The RBAC meets bi-monthly and serves a forum for discussion of bicycle-related topics and to facilitate the provision of bicycle accommodations, information, and resources in the greater Roanoke area. More specifically, the RBAC assists in updating and implementing the Bikeway Plan for the RVAMPO, hosts periodic Planners and Engineers Rides, and distributes the annual Regional Bike Awards (Bike Hero and Extraordinary Bicycle Professional).
RideSolutions
RideSolutions program promotes alternatives to driving alone – vanpools, carpools, transit, walking and cycling to work.
Roanoke City Bicycling Friendly Committee
Bicycle Advisory Committee. The BAC is comprised of City staff members who work closely with transportation and recreation issues, and citizens who are either avid cyclists or have an interest in making the City more bicycle friendly. The Committee prepared the application for Bicycle Friendly Community status resulting in Roanoke being recognized as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The Committee is currently working to address four Bicycle Friendly Community goals suggested by the League in their recommendations to the City. These are Increasing Bicycle Safety Education; Increasing Bicycle Use; Expanding the Bike Route System; and improving Bicycle Planning, Engineering, Evaluation and Enforcement.
